Powered by a 64-bit 1.6 GHz Marvell ARMADA 8040 ARMv8 Cortex-A72 Quad-Core processor, the TS-1635AX 16-Bay NAS Enclosure from QNAP provides the computing power necessary to run a range of applications to help businesses grow as their data increases. It uses 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which comes in a 1 x 8GB configuration and can be upgraded to 16GB by a 16GB module in the one 288-pin DIMM slot. Network connectivity is achieved using the two 10GbE SFP+ and two Gigabit Ethernet ports, providing high-speed connectivity and versatile networking possibilities. This NAS allows for hardware expansion with one PCIe 3.0 x2 slot and one PCIe 3.0 x1 slot, which would allow for a QM2 M.2 SSD, QM2 10GbE card, QWA-AC2600 wireless networking card, and/or a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 card. Additional peripherals can be connected using three USB 3.0 Type-A ports.

The TS-1635AX offers high-capacity storage potential, with twelve 3.5″/2.5″ SATA drive bays, four 2.5″ SATA drive bays, and two M.2 2280 SATA slots. While the twelve 3.5″/2.5″ bays are used for traditional storage, the four 2.5″ bays and two M.2 slots are designed to be outfitted with SSDs for enabling Qtier 2.0 technology to boost performance. This NAS also supports JBOD, Single, and a variety of RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, hot spare, and global hot spare, each of which offer data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both. Other integrated features include hardware-accelerated encryption of volumes and LUNs, Snapshots for disaster recovery, LXC and Docker containers and a Linux command line interface (CLI) for deploying virtualization applications, and more.

General Features

Boost Performance with SSDs and Qtier
The TS-1635AX comes with four dedicated 2.5-” drives bays and two M.2 SATA 2280 slots for installing SSDs. With SSDs, you can enable QNAP Qtier 2.0, which offers both automatic tiered storage and cache-like mechanisms for both volumes and iSCSI LUNs. This allows the TS-1635AX to be further accelerated to meet the performance requirements of demanding applications and scenarios, such as virtualization and 10GbE transmission.

QM2 Expansion Card
QNAP’s QM2 is a series of PCIe expansion cards that features dual M.2 SSD slots and/or 10GbE connectivity. This allows users to easily set up SSD caching or Qtier to optimize NAS performance. 10GbE-compatible QM2 cards can also future proof the TS-1635AX for use with 10GBASE-T networks. Equipped with a dedicated cooling module, the QM2 can maintain its high performance, even when tasked with the high workloads.

10GbE Connectivity Removes Bottlenecks
The TS-1635AX is 10GbE-ready with two 10GbE SFP+ ports for accelerating workflows without additional costs. For users without an existing 10GbE environment, the QNAP 10GbE/NBASE-T unmanaged switches are good choices for removing bottlenecks and to realize a streamlined data storage experience. For Windows/Linux systems, the QXG-10G1T 10GBASE-T/NBASE-T PCIe expansion card can be installed to add 10GbE functionality for a complete high-speed LAN environment.

File Exchange with Cross-Platform File Sharing and Qsync
The TS-1635AX supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux/UNIX networks. Data can be centrally stored and protected by rigid security measures provided by the TS-1635AX. The Windows AD and LDAP services enable system administrators to configure user permissions by using an existing Windows AD server, LDAP server, or built-in LDAP service. To sync data across devices, including mobile devices, simply install Qsync Central on the NAS and Qsync clients on other devices to enjoy a fast, private, secure, and real-time file sync service.

Secure Your Data with Snapshots and Hybrid Backup Sync
A complete disaster recovery plan requires multiple layers of data protection and backups. The TS-1635AX can use snapshots to record the state of files and modifications to them at the block level, so you can quickly revert to previous versions should an accident, such as deletion or malware attack, occur. For added data security, the Hybrid Backup Sync app can help back up, restore, and sync files to/from local external devices, remote NAS, and public cloud services.

QTS App Center
The TS-1635AX is powered by QTS, an intelligent app-driven operating system that provides functionality such as Qtier, RAID 50/60 support, Qboost, OCR Converter, and much more. The QTS App Center also provides a wide range of apps from QNAP and trusted third-parties to boost the functionality and possibilities of the TS-1635AX.

High-Flexibility Virtualization and Virtual Switches
The TS-1635AX supports versatile virtualization technologies such as containers (LXC and Docker) and Linux command-line interface (CLI) virtual machines (VMs), so you can easily migrate existing applications to or deploy new solutions on the TS-1635AX. Virtual switches support several modes for connecting containers, VMs, NAS, and physical network interfaces for flexibly deploying business IT infrastructure while ensuring high security.

Protect Your Data with Encryption and Other Security Features
The Marvell ARMADA 8040 processor inside the TS-1635AX features hardware-accelerated encryption, and is capable of encrypting volumes and/or LUN with AES-256 encryption without sacrificing performance. Other security features include 2-step authentication, IP address filtering, virus and malware scanners, and much more. You can also set permissions for users and folders to block access from unauthorized users and apps.

Easy Expansion for Future Storage Needs
As your business grows, so does your storage requirements. By using QNAP’s Virtual JBOD (VJBOD) technology, the TS-1635AX’s unused space can be allocated to and utilized by another QNAP NAS. For expanding the TS-1635AX’s capacity, one UX-800P or UX-500P expansion enclosure can be used.
