Apple has officially released the latest software update of iOS (iOS version 13.5) fixing a major issue users were facing while unlocking their device wearing a face mask. As countries all over the globe including Qatar are making face masks compulsory, this update makes unlocking your devices while wearing a face mask easier. More importantly, this upgrade is helpful for frontline health workers battling COVID-19, who spend the majority of their time wearing face masks.

The update is already live. You can install iOS 13.5 by opening the Settings app and going to General > Software Update.

Apart from this major update, Apple has also pushed a new COVID Exposure Notification feature in iOS 13.5. This feature which will use Bluetooth technology to let public health authorities build apps to alert people who have been in close proximity with someone who has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Both Apple and Google are involved in coronavirus contact tracing software. You can find this feature in Settings > Privacy > Health > COVID-19 Exposure Logging.

FaceTime

  • Option to control automatic prominence on Group FaceTime calls so video tiles do not change size when a participant speaks

Emergency Services

  • Option to automatically share health and other essential information
    from your Medical ID with emergency services when you place an
    emergency call (US only)

This update also includes bug fixes and other improvements.

  • Fixes an issue where users may see a black screen when trying to play streaming video from some websites
  • Addresses an issue in the share sheet where suggestions and actions may not load
